Funk music lost one of its unsung greats this week as Parliament-Funkadelic singer-guitarist and songwriter Garry Shider passed away on June 16, aged 56, from complications due to cancer. Anyone playing behind George Clinton, P-Funk’s mad genius ringleader, was destined to spend most of his or her time in the shadows, but Shider distinguished himself with his wormily insinuating vocals and writing ability–he helped compose funk classics such as “Bop Gun” and “One Nation Under a Groove.” (His tendency to wear a loincloth onstage also helped him stand out.) Shider was, and will continue to be, a beacon of funky freedom.

The FX show “Sons of Anarchy” is one of the very best shows on TV. The show is based on the Shakespeare play Hamlet, but not in the normal way. Instead, the show is based around a group of outlaw motorcycle riders called the Sons of Anarchy. The first time I watched this show on satellite TV in Michigan while on a business trip, I really did not know what to expect. I did not expect to get hooked, but it happened.
The show was created by Kurt Sutter, former writer for the TV show “The Shield.” He certainly has not lost his touch. He has a special way of casting and writing that truly makes you care about the characters that you see on TV. When you combine that with excellent performances from the cast, you almost feel like you are living the moments instead of watching them.
While all of the actors do a tremendous job, Charlie Hunnam steals the show as Jax Teller. He manages to make you care about every little thing he does. He portrays emotion better than almost any other actor in television.
All things considered, “Sons of Anarchy” is one of the best shows on TV. The strong plot is backed up by great acting. This show grabs you and does not let go for the entire hour that it is on.
